Cinematography News – May 2024
“Samuel Higgins GTC is an innovative and seasoned award-winning Director of Photography, renowned in the Film & TV industry for his powerful, emotionally evocative narratives, technical expertise, and artistic vision.
After serving in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces, where he honed his skills with imaging devices, Samuel transitioned this knowledge into the creative realm. His impressive portfolio includes work on productions such as James Bond, Casualty, Stella, Doctor Who, and Sherlock, making him a familiar presence at BBC Studios.
He has also been placed as Director of Photography for 5 full feature films & 7 short narratives independantly.
Samuel’s talent extends beyond narrative filmmaking. He has showcased his versatility in commercials and documentaries, capturing footage in environments as diverse as active war zones, UK prisons, and royal events. His commitment to his craft has earned him a place on “The Guild of Television Camera Professionals” (GTC) as a lead council member, and he now aspires to join the British Society of Cinematographers—a goal he hopes to achieve soon, especially with two of his recent films receiving multiple awards for “Best Cinematography” and “Best Film.”
With prestigious commercial clients such as Apple, Samsung, GoPro, Adidas, Schweppes, Land Rover & many, many more, Samuel has created internationally successful commercial spots across Social, Web & Television.
In addition to his professional achievements, Samuel is dedicated to giving back. He regularly volunteers with social services, offering his time to support children from challenging backgrounds & has been awarded as a Patron for “Invisible Walls”.
Having experienced most roles within broadcast television & the film industry Samuel is often called upon to lecture at Universities where he enjoys inspiring future film makers.
Samuel’s advice to aspiring cinematographers:
“If you can step back and say ‘that’ll do,’ it really won’t! Only your best is good enough.”
All I need is a camera
For many years I have been driven to produce immersive, emotive & thought provocative pieces, minimising the requirements of production. For you, it means no longer choosing between quick, low cost & great quality…something I’m very proud of.

Having Op’d on a vast selection of E.N.G covers, non scripted, drama, soap, sports coverage, live events, documentaries & broadcast, Sam has achieved a full guilded rank within the GTC & placed on the council. This continued to Social service content creation, something he is proud to persist with to date.

Sam uses stills to study art & refine his process, through this Sam has secured multiple photographic awards for portrait, street & landscape photography. Having a high vetting level, he continues to produce social service & child protected photography on a regular basis. Sam is occasionally called upon for set photography BTS & when not under a time constraint will shoot analogue 35mm or 120mm film.

All you need is an idea
If you can imagine, write, explain or dream it then I will make it reality. I have never experienced a client who doesn’t gasp with emotion watching playback & revel at a chance to challenge that…
